Call for input on the outcomes of the HR Monitor results March 2022.

I'd be grateful if you could send me your suggestions for improvement, anonymously, as comments to this post. In particular, I am interested in hearing your voice on the following points:

  •  What should our long-term goals be as a department?
  • In which areas, should we improve our standards?
  • What can the department do to empower you in your work, so that you can achieve your potential?
  • What training and development opportunities are you lacking?

Thanks in advance!

  1. These points are all connected. In my view, I think the single most important thing to do for the department, both short term and long term, is to bolster the research environment in every possible way. The department contains top notch research talent, but this talent without proper support from the university will sadly go to waste. The support that is currently seriously lacking is administrative support and lab space. Both will of course cost the university something, but this has to be seen as an important investment. In fact, it should be seen as a natural part of being an institution that values research. The recent space crunch and of course the added responsibilities related to teaching (including coping with the uncertainties of the last couple of years), has further contributed to the feeling that research is taking a back seat.

Few things we can do as a department, with your help: (1) Review what administrative processes, and supporting human resources, could be established within the department to empower our research talent; (2) Put pressure on the RU administration to let the department use grant overheads to carry out this crucial departmental research support; and (3) Insist on getting the RU administration to commit to a long-term plan for vastly growing the department's research space (we all need to see the light at the end of the tunnel!), which may include space in planned campus extensions.
